Wellness Contains All Natural Ingredients
Wellness Contains All Natural Ingredients

Remember the infamous pet food recall of 2007? Name brands that everyone trusted were now dangerous and killing our pets. I always assumed brands like IAMS and Purina were the best. It was unfortunate to discover poisonous ingredients coming from China were going into our pets' foods. Since then, I don't trust a lot of brands anymore. After doing research I quickly learned that not all brands of pet food are created equal. I've learned about fillers, by-products, preservatives and artifical ingredients. All of these can harm your cat. It was then that I started to read up on holistic cat foods.  Holistic foods are all natural, which means I don't have to worry about toxins in my pets' foods.

Of all the brands I've tried, the one that I've stuck with is Wellness. My cats love Wellness cat food. They simply devour it. Unlike a lot of pet foods, Wellness actually does taste like food.  I understand the label and most of the ingredients are meat and not fillers or by-products. As for preservatives, Wellness uses Vitamin C and Vitamin E (natural preservatives).

Within days I noticed the difference in my cats. My cat, Bailey, has always been overweight and his fur was never as soft as his sister's. One day when I was relaxing on the couch he jumped up to cuddle with me. I started to pet him and I was simply stunned to feel how soft his fur was. I knew it had to be the cat food. Bailey is naturally a big cat. He also loves food. I couldn't help noticing him losing a few pounds on the new food. Ramona, on the other hand is a small cat. She has always had a silky coat but it just shines so much now. She has so much more energy and is always bouncing around. I also don't have stinky litter boxes anymore. My cats are visably much healthier than before.

Wellness won my cats over. Like people, not all cats like the same things. If your cats don't take to Wellness, there are other great brands to try. Here are some things to look for in the ingredients.

The first ingredient should be meat. This does not include by-product. By-product is a misnomer. It does not usually contain meat. It's usually the parts of the animal that are not to be eaten. Common animal parts that are by-product is head, beak, feet, ears and anything else that is not to be eaten. By-products are not only lacking of nutrition but they could be dangerous to your pet.

Watch for carbohydrates (fillers). Remember cats are carnivores and do not need carbohydrates. Corn is cheap and a lot of factories use corn because of this reason. Our furry little friends cannot digest corn well. It is a food that cats should not be eating at all. If you feed your cats dry food, fillers are needed to hold the dry kibbles together. Look for whole grains, brown rice and barley. I am not including wheat to this list due to possible allergies.

Ingredients in your cats' food should contain protein, taurine, vitamins, minerals and a fat source. Taurine is an amino acid that is necessarry for cats. Without it many ailments can occur, including blindness.

Here are a few other brands that I suggest:

  • Buffalo Blue Healthy Cat Food
  • AvoDerm
  • Halo
